The United States government failed to carry out its obligation to protect the health and economic well-being of the Navajo people during the period of the uranium mining boom. This was done not of malice but through willful neglect. Numerous opportunities presented themselves where the Atomic Energy Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and even the U.S. Congress could have inserted their authority and perhaps prevented this tragedy but, for various reasons, chose not to do so.
